In the second chapter of Exodus, it is said that Moses was born of a Levite father and mother; Amram and Jochebed. A Levite is a descendent of Jacob’s 3rd son, Levi. A few years before, Pharaoh declared that all newborn sons of Hebrews should be thrown into the Nile. This was because of decendants of Jacob’s family had grown from 70 to over 1 million souls in almost 400 years.

After Moses was born, Jochebed hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister, Miriam, stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

Pharoah’s daughter spotted Moses and rescued him. She sent a servant to find someone to nurse him; she found Jochebed. How fortunate that she could help nuture her son! A lot more happens when Moses becomes an adult…stay tuned for more.
